PERMITS: Kentucky oversize permits are issued for the duration needed and must be obtained before entering the state. Oversize loads can travel 24/7, except during peak hours in certain counties. Overweight permits are valid for 10 days. Permits can be combined when appropriate and are vehicle-specific.
OPERATING TIME: Sunrise to sunset seven days a week. Overweight only and not over 75′ overall length may have continuous travel. No movement during weekday rush hours in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties (7:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM).
RESTRICTED TRAVEL: No travel allowed on major holidays and some holiday weekends. Movement is restricted during rush hours in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties (7:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM, Monday–Friday). Additional restrictions may apply in construction zones and on certain parkways.

MISCELLANEOUS: In Kentucky, lift axles aren’t considered when issuing routine permits. Attachments like blades, buckets, or counterweights can be added to the load without issue. However, you can’t combine a load with different over-dimension issues on separate pieces, such as a load with an overwidth dozer and an overheight backhoe.
SIGNS, FLAGS & LIGHTS: “Oversize Load” signs are required for all loads moving under a permit. Red flags must be attached to each side of widest part of wide load, and to the rear of all overlength loads. If overhang is over legal limits, end of overhanging object must be flagged and “a lamp shall be placed at the end of the load to make the overhang more visible during periods of hazy daylight.” Overweight only loads need “Oversize Load” signs when running in daylight, but they must be taken off if running at night.
